Course Overview
English Language and Literature A Level is a stimulating and accessible course which allows you to develop your knowledge of and interest in all aspects of English. It offers opportunities for you to develop your subject expertise by engaging creatively, critically and independently with a wide range of texts (including poetry, novel(s), drama, non-fiction and non-literary).
Using literary and linguistic concepts and methods, you will analyse literary and non-literary texts in a range of modes and genres. You will develop skills as producers and interpreters of language by creating texts yourself and critically reflecting on your own processes of production.
Course Requirements

Standard A Level entry requirements: 5 x GCSE grade 5 or above (must include Maths and English Language).
What you will Learn
The course enables you to develop critical and analytical skills which are highly valued by employers and universities. Plus, the course complements all arts, humanities and sciences. Staff are passionate about the subject and eager to share their love of learning and expertise with students. The classroom environment is engaging and stimulating.
There is a coursework element to the course (non-exam assessment), worth 20% of the final grade, which allows you to investigate a technique or theme in literary and non-literary discourse (for example: novel and autobiography, real life and fictional). Cultural trips and enrichment opportunities are available.
Assessment
There are two exams after two years (worth 80% of the course) and coursework (worth 20% of the course).
Progression
The variety of assessment styles used, such as re-creative writing, commentary writing, discursive essays and research-based investigative writing, allows you to develop a wide range of skills. These include the ability to read critically, analyse, evaluate and undertake independent research, which are invaluable for both further study at university and future employment. Mandatory Units
The qualification requires you to study the following: an anthology of non-fiction and non-literary study; a prose set text; a poetry set text; a drama set text; fiction/non-fiction set text for recreative writing; coursework.
