Course Overview

The Steps to Vocational Learning course is designed for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) who are working at Entry 3 to Level 1.

This course supports students who prefer practical hands-on learning and want to build confidence and independence.
Students benefit from a personalised and supportive learning environment.

Course Requirements

This course is designed for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) who are working at Entry Level 3 (E3) to Level 1

What you will Learn

Students will complete a range of exciting meaningful units, which will help to increase independence and confidence, develop skills for everyday life and future employment or supported work, these include:
– Communication skills- expressing ideas clearly and confidently
– Working with others – teamwork and social interaction
– Problem solving – making choices and overcoming challenges
– Managing own learning – organisation and independence
– Personal safety and wellbeing – staying safe and healthy
– Community participation -engaging with the world around you

Students are supported through smaller class sizes, experienced SEND staff, learning facilitators, visual resources with structured learning in a safe and supportive environment.

Students will also study functional English and maths tailored to each learner’s level.

Assessment

Coursework and Portfolio based assessment

Students are assessed in a variety of ways. We establish a learner’s starting point within their induction and create a tailored learning package in line with the Initial Assessment results.

Assessment throughout the course is regular and appropriate; observations, completed written coursework, practical activities and presentations are utilised to assess the progression of our learners.

Progression

Vocational courses at Level 1 (e.g., horticulture, catering, hair and beauty, construction)
Supported Internships
Work experience or supported employment
Independent living programmes or community-based learning

Career Options

After completing Choices – Steps to Vocational Skills, students can progress into further vocational learning, supported pathways or employability programmes, depending on their skills, interests and level of independence.

The course helps students build confidence, practical skills and work-related behaviours, supporting positive next steps towards further study, training or employment.

Mandatory Units

Students are expected to complete a core set of skill areas to achieve the qualification, the programme structure is flexible and personalised which is helpful for SEND learners.
Core Units include:
– Independent Living
– Employment Awareness
– Personal Development
With additional units based on student needs and interests.
